Purpose & Benefits of Membrane Waterproofing in Dubai

The membrane system is designed to:

How Membrane Waterproofing Works

Forms an impermeable barrier preventing water and moisture passage

Can resist positive water pressure (outside-in) and, in some cases, negative pressure (inside-out)

Membranes are elastic, durable, and capable of bridging minor cracks from thermal or structural movement

Step-by-Step Membrane Waterproofing Process

Surface Preparation

  • Clean the substrate: remove dust, oil, laitance, and sharp edges
  • Repair cracks, honeycombs, or voids with approved repair mortar
  • Ensure surface is smooth and dry
  • Primer Application

  • Apply bituminous primer at 0.3–0.5 L/m² using brush or roller
  • Allow 4–6 hours drying (tack-free)
  • Enhances adhesion between the membrane and concrete
  • Membrane Installation

  • Unroll bituminous membrane and align properly
  • Heat the underside with a gas torch for bonding
  • Overlap edges: Side laps: 100 mm, End laps: 150 mm
  • Use roller or hand pressure to ensure proper adhesion and air removal
  • Detailing & Corners

  • Reinforce corners, joints, and upturns with extra strips
  • Seal around drains, pipes, and penetrations with additional patches and mastic
  • Protection Layer

  • Apply geotextile sheet, protection board, or screed to prevent mechanical damage
  • Testing

  • Perform a flood test (24–48 hours) to confirm no leakage
  • Finishing

  • Apply protective screed (min. 40 mm) or install tiles/pavers/insulation as required
  • Alternative: Liquid-Applied Membrane

Ideal for complex or small surfaces:

    Clean and prepare surface
    Apply primer coat
First coat of liquid membrane (brush or roller)
    Place reinforcement mesh if needed
Apply second coat perpendicular to the first
    Cure 24–48 hours before finishing

Common materials: Polyurethane, acrylic, epoxy, bituminous emulsions

    Advantages of Membrane Waterproofing

High flexibility for thermal and structural movements

    Excellent adhesion and long-lasting durability

Seamless waterproofing (liquid membranes have no joints)

Resistant to water, chemicals, and UV rays (depending on type)

Suitable for positive and negative side waterproofing

Long service life (15–25 years with maintenance)

    Quality Checks & Testing

    Visual Inspection:

    overlaps, seams, and adhesion

    Flood Test:

fill area with 50–75 mm water for 24–48 hours

    Adhesion Test:

    peel test for bonding strength

    Thickness Test:

ensure correct membrane thickness (3–4 mm typical)

    Spark Test:

detect pinholes or gaps in large areas

    Applications in Dubai

    Flat and sloped roofs

    Basements and retaining walls

    Podiums and terraces

    Wet areas: bathrooms, kitchens, toilets

    Water tanks and swimming pools

    Tunnels, bridges, and underpasses

    Conclusion

The Membrane Waterproofing System is a high-performance, flexible, and durable solution suitable for a wide range of structures in Dubai.

Whether using sheet membranes or liquid-applied membranes, it provides seamless water protection, chemical resistance, and structural durability.

Proper surface preparation, membrane overlap, detailing, and protective layers are essential to ensure long-term waterproofing performance, making it ideal for roofs, basements, and substructures in the harsh Middle East climate.

    Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

The Membrane Waterproofing System is a high-performance protective barrier applied to structural surfaces to prevent water ingress, leakage, and moisture damage.

It is widely used for critical areas such as flat and sloped roofs, basements, podiums, terraces, retaining walls, and more.

Membrane systems offer high flexibility to handle thermal movement and structural stress, provide excellent adhesion, and create a durable and often seamless barrier.

The system forms an impermeable, highly elastic barrier that prevents the passage of water and moisture.

Surface preparation is arguably the most critical step. The substrate must be clean, free of dust, oil, and sharp edges, and all cracks, honeycombs, or voids must be repaired.

The primer is applied before the membrane to enhance the adhesion between the membrane material and the concrete substrate.

When installing sheet membranes, proper overlapping is essential for a continuous, seamless seal. The standard requirement is a 100 mm overlap on the side laps and a 150 mm overlap on the end laps.

A protection layer is applied immediately after the membrane installation to prevent mechanical damage, punctures, or tears caused by subsequent construction activities.

Yes, they are suitable for water tanks and swimming pools to provide a safe, impermeable barrier.

When installed correctly and protected by a finishing layer, a high-quality membrane system can offer a service life of 15 to 25 years.
